>> reporter: a mysterious mayday call led the coast guard on a search for a distressed boater. coming up you will hear the call and we'll tell i you how the new technology pointed stoich -- we'll tell you how the new technology pointed searchers in the right direction. firefighters worked to put out a fire through the night. another tenant is responsible of that -- for that fire.

good afternoon. topping our news this noontime, the u.s. coast guard is searching the waters off marin county after a mysterious mayday message. the frantic call came in last night. by using new equipment, the coast guard was able to estimate the location of the call as being made close to tiburon. ktvu's claudine wong joins us to learn if the search has made any progress. >> reporter: good afternoon. no, they've not made any progress. in fact, they've officially called this search off and still don't know who made this mayday call or why. but the coast guard does believe, they say, that the search has been extensive and they say new technology has -- was able to point them what -- point them in what they believe was right direction.

>> mayday! >> reporter: that distress came in last night on marin channel 16. think of channel 16 as 911 for anyone on the water. >> the one thing we got was the word "mayday." and that's the signal for us to go out and search for anything. >> reporter: nothing else was ever heard from that caller. despite repeated efforts from the coast guard to get her back on the radio. >> vessel herring. vessel herring, this is the san francisco coast guard. >> mayday, united states coast guard, state your position and nature of your distress. >> reporter: so the coast guard immediately launched a search. even without any information on location, the coast guard says it wasn't a blind search. new technology instead sent the coast guard to the tiburon peninsula. that technology is called rescue 21. it's considered the coast guard

advanced communication center and over the next couple of years it will be installed over the nation. san francisco got it only a few months ago. >> we're able to locate you based on your radio call and we we -- and we are able to find your position. we're able to locate the people now instead of just having distressed calls where we don't know where to look. >> reporter: san francisco has the highest caseload of any where in the nation for these calls. last year, there were 1600 reported. some ended up being rescues, some were hoaxes and some were never resolved. that may happen in this case. the search in in case was suspended. so the active search has

officially been suspended but the coast guard says they did put out a message to all of the commercial and tug vessels last night, overnight and this morning asking them for any information. if they have any information they will certainly reopen this investigation. live here on treasure island, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. oakland police are still trying to sort out a rash of shootings last night that happened all at the same time, at 10:00. a man was shot on 62nd, a woman was shot on holly street and a man and a woman were shot on 36th and west street. police say a man was shot on the back on 62nd. while officers were helping that victim someone pulled up and reported another shooting. in that incident a woman's finger was shot off. she was taken to highland hospital for treatment. then after 10:30, police say a man and a woman were shot while sitting in their car. both of them required surgery. anyone with information about any of these shootth are urged

to call -- shootings are urged to call police. police and investigators are going back to keller canyon landfall. this is day five for the search of 35-year-old frederick sales. he's been missing for nearly two weeks. investigators fear he may have been a victim of last week's deadly rampage. efren valdemoro is suspected of killing his father, along with three other people. authorities say documents from hercules have been found in the area and they are optimistic they are looking in the right place. stay with ktvu.com and ktvu news for the latest on this. we'll bring you the latest developments as they happen. the union city man accused of shooting a fremont police officer is due to be arraigned in about two hours. 22-year-old andrew barrientos faces attempted murder and other young charges.

he was arrested almost two weeks ago near the mexican border. officer young remains in the hospital with critical wounds to his legs. he will probably need physical therapy but he is expected to recover. people who drive across the dumbarton bridge may notice changes to the salt pond. it's now restoreed. the ceremony that included important state officials is just just-- is just wrapping you. jade hernandez has more. >> reporter: driving across the dumbarton bridge may become more scenic. drivers can see these platforms here and what you can see from the platforms is expected to change over the next few season seasons. a pond used to produce salt is filled with bay waters. the hope the nesting will attract new migrating shore birds and act as a key to the

survival of several endangered animals native to the marshes. >> this is not your parents' salt pond. it's to test, the first test, of a reconfigured pond. >> reporter: despite the name, this provides platforms for the public. senator dianne feinstein's initial push to buy this land seven years ago for a third of the $3 million price tag, set in motion a huge project, what she calls a good start for protecting the bay area. >> one, two, three! together. and we must find the most cost effective way to complete this job. >> reporter: the south bay salt pond restoration project encompasses more than 15,000 acres which includes trails. >> this is exactly what i had been working for since i came here. been here about five years. this is exactly what i wanted to see. >> reporter: this project is the largest title wetlands project on the west coast and funds came from the state, federal and private level. reporting live, jade hernand, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, jade. crews are back at petaluma river cleaning um an oil leak. the oil has spread across the two-mile stretch of the river between downtown petaluma and highway 101. the leak was first noticed yesterday morning. the source is this old tugboat that's being torn apart as scrap metal. so far 600 gallons of oil have

made it in the river. there's no reports of harm. but it's still unclear how long the cleanup will take. the future of three schools, kennedy, olinda, and grant school, are on the chopping -- are in question tonight. the city of richmond came up with $1.5 million to keep the schools open through this school year. tonight richmond city council will be voting on whether or not to continue funding the schools. a martinez high school student was injured this morning by another student who had a knife on campus. it all started just before 8:00 a.m. at hogan high school on rosewood avenue in martinez. school district officials say the 17-year-old was involved in some sort of altercation with another student who pulled a knife. he was caught on the face and neck. he was treated and released from the hospital. so far no arrests have been

made. investigators blame a man who they say was doing drugs for starting a fire at an oakland motel. flames damaged seven units of the travel inn on west macarthur boulevard. a visitor from mississippi said she was staying next door where the fire started. >> the flames were whooshing out. it was over the top and the back and everything. it was kind of bad and i'm still shaken up. >> that visitor and other guests had been relocated to other parts of the hotel. no one was injured. investigators say the fire was started by a man staying in one of the rooms. he reportedly was spoking. he was taken to a hospital for a psychiatric examination. more opposition today to a multi-million dollar project that b.a.r.t. says will help you get to the

during the past hour at the coliseum b.a.r.t. station, the met commission has been urged to reject a plan for the airport connector. the three-mile long elevated railway will connect the coliseum station to the airport. the group, transform, says the $500 billion plan is a waste of taxpayers' money. >> this tram seems like a good idea to a lot of people. it wasn't too much min. it was gonna carry a lot of riders. that's ten years ago. we're now talking about $500 million for a little three-mile cable car that cakes you to a parking lot -- takes you to a parking lot and to help pay for it, b.a.r.t. is gonna go into debt and charge a very high fare on top of your b.a.r.t. fare. >> a new report finds this would get passengers to the bus

station -- to the airport slower than the bus station. certain areas on the train tracks where transit goes through can cause hearing damage. here's kraig debro. >> reporter: if you have written b.a.r.t. through the transbay tube you've heard this sound. a story in today's "chronicle" successes the intensity of the sound as measured in decibels is unhealthy. >> i seem -- i see people with headphones. and i always think i should get some but i never do. >> reporter: what do you think of the noise? >> what? [ laughter ] >> it's loud. >> reporter: they mushed decibels at 100. that's the sound of a jackhammer. >> this train -- any train system in the country is gonna make noise.

>> reporter: but not loud enough for a sustained period of time to cause hearing damage. the a study says a person -- a study says a person would have to be subjected to these noises for some time before it would take an effect. train operators wear ear devices or ear plugs. b.a.r.t. fights train noise with train noise. b.a.r.t. has two rail grinders to help reduce the noise. they can shave off the track to help amplify the noise. b.a.r.t. says the reason is primarily safety. while none of the track noises are established lock enough to

affect people with normal hear, the article does not affect those people who already have hearing problems. in oakland, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. accident rates are up for san francisco muni. the san francisco "examiner" reports that buses and trains were involved in about six crashes per every 10,000 miles in april through june. that includes this fatal accident a few months ago when a man was truck by two buses. the new figures mark the first time in a year that muni has missed its safety goals. a man is in jail following a police chase and crash in oakland. it happened around 12:30 this morning after police officers tried to pull the man over for speeding. investigators say the man refused to stop and then sped down mandella parkway before crashing his suv on 28th street. officers say they found a gun in nearby bushes. a background check revealed he was a parolee out on bail for another offense.

a pastor's plan to burn the koran is cre aing a lot of controversy. a pastor in gainesville, florida wants to burn the koran. this is creating a lot of uproar from people and general david petraeus. >> i believe we're dealing with an element you cannot talk to. we're dealing with an element they shut be shown a -- must be shown a certain amount of force, determination and putting a stop to it. >> reporter: the pastor could change his mind saying he's still praying about the decision. but if he goes ahead with it, he will be violating local laws as the church has been twice denied the proper permits to build a bonfire. investigators are still trying to determine the cause of an early-morning fire near a busy bay area freeway. the fire broke out at 4:30 this

morning near sir francis boulevard. crews were able to keep the flames away from nearby homes. the highway patrol was called in to monitor traffic control. checking in with our meteorologist, steve paulson. quite a bit cooler? >> boy, i'll say. temperatures along the coast and in the city, quite a difference. san francisco is struggling to get out of the 50s. look at that fog bank. it's roaring back. there is a little hint of a northeast in santa rosa. the rest southwest wind at travis and the low clouds clouds and fog are -- low clouds and fog are banking up. it's thick, thick, thick. on the marin, san mateo, santa cruz coastlines, you can see the low clouds in the gray skies. temperatures will be noticably cooler for some and dramatically cooler for others. temperatures were in the 80s and 90s and we'll see the

temperatures cool down. forecasted highs, 50s to 80s. those 80s will be way inland. late night early tomorrow morning, a very strong low -- i will get out of the way so you can see it -- first the front starting to slide in. this looks like the first of what could be three little lows turning into bigger lows as we get into the next somebody everyone to -- seven to ten days. this one will drop in. you can see that one right there working its way in. it's really advanced the fog ahead of it. 50s by the coas 60s around the bay or low 70s. 57 san francisco. their high yesterday was 84. 64 oakland berkeley. low 70s now. santa rosa, livermore, concord. it's warmer up in tahoe and reno. sacramento is only 74. utah yaw was down to -- ukiah

was down to 47. behad a couple of -- we had a couple of upper 40s. it's a little chilly. the temperatures are cool, even down to southern california. the strong system right there will move in to northern california tomorrow. that will give us further cooling, pick you up the -- pick up the wind and it will eject out of here probably not until thursday. today, five to 20 degrees cooler. maybe more so for some along the coast. gusts to 35 at travis. even drizzle being reported down to santa cruz and watsonville. fog continues on the coast around the bay. sunny but breezy to windy. temperatures low 80s, but a lot of low 50, 60s and 70s in between. the cooling trend started today. it will carry us into wednesday, probably thursday and then a little rebound friday and saturday. i think yesterday was the warmest day for a while, tori. >> thank you, steve. >> you bet.

a concord woman is recovering after she fell into a 22-foot ravine while hiking on mount tam. a rescue highlighter rescue the woman and she was taken to john muir medical center for treatment of her injuries. she suffered various cuts and a possible broken ankle. a san jose teenager was rescued at the kern river. the 19-year-old grabbed a rock but was stranded there. kern county sheriff departments were not able to reach the teen by boat. a helicopter was brought in to lift him out of the vehicle. if your schedule this afternoon includes a trip to the dmv, you might need more time. that's because some time of system failure shut down operations at all of the dmv offices statewide. it's still unclear what caused the problem which began about 9:00. the dmv was up and running again about an hour later. it is feared the backlog could
